I was just like you before I turned 30, buddy. I was 5'9", 135 lbs and had a 36-inch chest. Now, 24 years later, I've gained 45 pounds and my chest is 42" now. My waist is still only 32", up from 30" just 25 years ago.
What did it for me were two things: time and diet. You will have to be patient on the first one, because once you pass 30 you start gaining weight as your testosterone decreases. That leaves your diet.
In order to maintain muscle mass and not get overweight, you will have to eat lots of protein and vegetables. Once or twice a week, go ahead and "carb up" with whole-grain pasta, wheat bread and cheese. Also, go to GNC or other health-food stores and buy some weight-gain powder. Make 1 or 2 shakes a day and (as Grappling Hooked said), drink it before bedtime. A PBJ sandwich is also a good healthy post-workout snack.
