I have exchanged bear hugs in almost all my matches, but I have not yet had a bearhug battle where both my opponent and I bearhug each other simultaneously. I would love to try that.
I've only had mutually applied bearhug battles where we both over/under arm lock up our bearhugs and battle for bearhug dominance. Exhausting, but very enjoyable. No flakey fake grunting and groaning, but full on no mercy mutual bearhug lock-ups. As of right now, I'm currently undefeated. At least for now with no intention of just letting my winning streak break without a helluva fight.
Best bearhug battle? When both squeeze the other at the same time, until one give up. That way the energy of both men is used at the same time and it's a more balanced (and far more exciting) fight, instead of taking turns...
The best " Bearhug Battle" I have experienced was being strapped to my opponent ( we used a moving strap ) . Neither man locked the hold until we started then you had to grapple to apply the hold. If you lose you are strapped to your man until he accepts your submission.
I say yes, my rival and I criss cross arms at first when we begin our squeeze. And we still manage, albeit more difficulty, to lift eachother at some point during the competition. Alot of chest bumping and belly bumping too, and I'm not mentioning the fight that goes on below our bellies sometimes. Then as the competition goes and we both start to get tired and he and I are to the point of finishing this, we'll slap wrestle while standing to see who can get under the arms hold and he who does usually finishes the fight and wins.
Sure, the cross-hold does qualify and, by the way, it's used in most traditional wrestling styles where strength is the main weapon.
But even with the usual hold, the guy on the "outside" can squeeze the other (including his arms) and still win the match.
If the two were equally matched that would be a glorious battle. But its unlikely to go on much beyond Round 2. Especially if the other guy is trying hard to break away. Holding on to someone of equal size trying to get out would require 100% of your energy. Definitely not something you're going to regenerate more than twice in a short period. You'd have to throw in at least a 10 minute break between rounds or expect it to be an intense but relatively short challenge.
I often bearhug wrestle my rival, and he's the same size and strengths as me. Equal difficult match. You are right, if we go straight on it won't get to round 2 because of the effort. So we usually use time rounds so that if we are in any kind of stalemate of any kind we can take a quick break and change things up.
I only had that experience once with a rival my size. After just a few minutes (maybe it was seconds?) under full BH pressure we were both soaked through and through in sweat (my socks were squishy) and so completely exhausted that neither of us could move. The winner of the match was determined by who could get back to his feet first.
Sounds more like a strength test challenge to me? In generally, I use the BH as an opening move and in most cases the bout is over before it starts. I think I've only ever wrestled one guy that was equal to me in size. Half were smaller, the other half were bigger (heavier) but not as tall as me.
one guys puts the other in a bearhug for 5 minutes. see if he can get out. if not then it goes up to 10 min and keeps increasing in time if he can't get out. however after 5 minutes the guys switch so the guy who was in the bearhug now applies it for 5 min. if he can't get out it goes up to 10 etc but the guys keep alternating until one guy admits he's a pussy and can't go on any longer or gets out. if neither admits defeat after the time limits, the time keeps on increasing and increasing.

The over/under arm lock up is the best for a long bearhug fight, more balanced and interesting. It can last quite a long exciting time...

I don't really understand how it works...

I'm not seeing that as balanced. The guy holding from under the arms will always have a tighter grip than the one holding over the arms.
On the other hand, I suppose you could crisscross hold. But does that still qualify as a BH? 🤔

the other guy doesn't try to break away. you alternate each round between the 2 guys involved.
